Who We Are
It was the breakup of the family that prompted a group of Baptist Laymen to found what is now Baptist Family and Childrens Services. Their decision not to build an orphanage was unique for the time. Meeting for the first time on October 22, 1920, they elected entrepreneur Willoughby McCormick as their first president. Best known for the Baltimore-based spice company that bears his name, McCormick is credited with being the driving force behind the agencys work. Today, his fingerprints can still be seen on new ministry initiatives.
The agency helped 225 people during its first decade despite a monetary struggle for survival. Today, we embrace the legacy provided by our founders when they chose not to build buildings.
The communities of Maryland and Delaware.
The families living in those communities.
Baptist Family and Children's Services is dedicated to serving God by ensuring the physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being of families and children.
The monetary struggles still exist, but much progress has been made since those early years and were pleased to report that the lives of over 4,200 children and families were touched this past year through one or more of the ministries of Baptist Family and Childrens Services.
And the growth continues. We have been involved in a year long planning process designed to give us the tools to embrace the future with renewed enthusiasm. We have some new and innovative programs and services for families and children. The opportunities which lie ahead are boundless. As we approach our 80th birthday, we invite you to join us as we celebrate the past and look forward to tomorrow.
